BUTTON BEARS by Marijke Haerkens
Marijke had wanted to create things for as long as she could remember and after leaving school she studied for five years at the Academy of Fine Arts followed by an extra year in fashion design. Always intrigued by fabric, she fell in love with mohair the very first time she held it in her fingers. Her first bear show was in 1992 but bear making was interrupted for a couple of years after giving birth to her son. Nowadays she works 4 days a week and her spare time is divided between her family and bear making. Marijke only makes about 50 bears a year as she feels that the bears "get unhappy faces " when she rushes things. Marijke enjoys combining contemporary and traditional techniques to achieve the subtle aged appearance that she wants to create. She will brew up her own dyes from all sorts of natural ingredients like berries, nut shells and leaves but also use air brushing. Please click on each photo for more photos and a full description of each bear.
